A passenger ferry collided with a fishing boat in the Philippines, killing three people and leaving search and rescue crews combing the water for dozens more who remained missing overnight.

The wooden-hulled ferry Catalyn B, carrying 73 people, collided with the small fishing boat in Manila Bay near the tiny island of Limbones just before dawn, and sank shortly after the accident.

At least 50 people from the ferry, which had been travelling from Manila, were plucked alive from the darkened waters, but it was not clear how many were in the fishing boat. Despite the ferry sinking, the fishing boat, named Nathalia, was reportedly damaged but still afloat after the crash.

Passengers leapt into the dark sea and parents dropped children into life rafts when a ferry carrying nearly 1,000 people capsized in the middle of the night in the southern Philippines.

Nine people died and more than 30 were missing though rescue efforts saved about 900 terrified victims on the Superferry 9 early Sunday after it turned on its side 9 miles (15 kilometers) off Zamboanga del Norte province.

Buddhist monks hurling rocks at Chinese in Tibet, or peacefully massing against Myanmar’s military, can strike jarring notes.

These scenes run counter to Buddhism’s philosophy of shunning politics and embracing even bitter enemies — something the faith has adhered to, with some tumultuous exceptions, through its 2,500-year history.

But political activism and occasional eruptions of violence have become increasingly common in Asia’s Buddhist societies as they variously struggle against foreign domination, oppressive regimes, social injustice and environmental destruction.

It’s a few days before launch. The IP is in order, the press release is written and the espresso machine is set to stun. You couldn’t be happier and why not?

Everything is finally working out. There is only one nagging question left to ask before you call up the family and break out the champagne, “How in the world are we going to make money?”

It never ceases to amaze me how many web companies set up shop without any coherent picture about how they are going to make a revenue. Worse than those are the startups that have a plan, but one that would require 100,000 users and a small cluster of consumer behavior shifts to function.
